Last week I was walking along the road I walk through every day to go to my daily gym class. At some point, I passed by that nice elderly man and we have an inside joke that one of us must be following the other. We’ve grown so used to seeing each other almost everyday, that we can say all this with a smile and a laugh. But today, I encountered a different situation which inspired me to write this post. I saw a guy wearing a fluffy purple coat and black and white striped skinny trousers. You might be thinking, that’s not the best fashion choice..it wasn’t. But his fashion choice is besides the point. For starters, he was wearing this outfit with such pride that it actually didn’t look half as bad on him. The other surprising aspect of this situation was that absolutely NO ONE looked at him twice, glanced or mocked him in any way. Although Malta is slowly starting to embrace variety, difference and tolerance, this was such a breath of fresh air to me.
Lately, I’ve been making a few different style choices myself. Although I won’t be wearing a purple fluffy coat anytime soon, I’ve started to appreciate the value of key pieces. When I was younger, I was obsessed in buying the latest fashion trends. While I’m certainly not against trends in any way, I started putting a bit more thought in what I purchase. I believe that how you style the purchases together tells more about you than the pieces themselves. Investing in a few key pieces and having the ability to style them uniquely is clearly a skill.
The moral of the story is wear whatever you want as long as you’re comfortable in it and as long as it makes you feel YOU. I promise you, you’ll feel so confident embracing your style rather than following a fashion trend blindly.
